Dreaming in Hollywood

Remember being asked to do creative writing in High school and the one thing the teacher would emphasis EVERY time was that “I don’t want to see anyone end it with IT WAS ALL A DREAM”?

Of course the reason the teacher said this was because “It was all a dream” is the perfect Deus Ex Machina to solve any problems brought up in a plot without being thought about by the composer. That said, there have been some amazing Movies in the last one hundred years that deal with the concept of dreams.

Some, like “The Wizard of Oz” use a dream to play out a fantasy to teach a moral, “Nightmare on Elm Street” played with our fears of what happens when we sleep, while others like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” play with the concepts of Memory and dreams. Of course, long before the advent of film, we had Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” show us how demented and abstract our dreams may be, a concept oft-repeated today. A long Hiatus…

Wow,  it has been forever.

Almost felt like starting afresh, but while not leave the old stuff up I say?

Yeah, ok, so that list of sequels never got finished. Sue me. Instead though, I’m gonna get back to writing some articles, still about culture etc, but more random musings than easy-to-make lists… maybe that way my lazy fiance will stop writing lists and produce more of her fantastic stuff….

Yeah, so will write soon.

Some perspective

According to NASA, the universe is 12000000000 yrs old. The average lifespan of an Australian is 81 yrs. That means your life is going to take up 6.75 × 10-9%

of the universal lifespan TO DATE.

One day in that life is the same as 3.38237781 × 10-5%

of the life. That means one day in your life is worth more to that life than 5000 yrs would to the universe. So treat each day as if it is as important as five millenia. To you, it should be. What time have you been wasting because you were afraid, or because you were too focused on the past or future to live in the present?

It is time to change.

Before Sunset

Before Sunrise“, written and dDirected by Richard Linklater, tells the story of two young people, one from America, one from France, spending a night in Vienna before going their separate ways. It is full of philosophical and emotional dialogue and somehow touched my heart when I saw it. Very few people agree with me, but I think it is an amazing film.

Before Sunset is even better, but only because the original was so good. Why is it better? Because it answers the question that any fan of the movie had been asking over the ten years between.

Number 7 and 8 are both good action movies which I guess shows what works in terms of sequels, but also are both movies that I would watch RATHER THAN the original.
